Inclusion of Church Complicity to American Racism in Seminary Curriculum

Inclusion of Church Complicity to American Racism in Seminary Curriculum
The Issue
As a seminary graduate, I earned my Masters of Divinity from Regent University in 2018. While I appreciate the scope of curriculum used to teach church history, I found that the material did not address the role the American church played in legitimating racism in America.
As an African American student, it would have been extremely beneficial to have had included in my seminary experience a course that explored the relationship between African Americans and Christianity. If the purpose of teaching church history is to help seminary students understand the historical context of contemporary theology, examining the role the American church played in legitimating racism in America would afford students an opportunity to critique their own embedded theology as well as offer solutions towards unifying the American and Global Church community.
I am petitioning for Regent University to add to its church history curriculum the topic of the American church and racism in America using “The Color of Compromise” by Jemar Tisby and other scholarly texts of the like, to develop the curriculum.
