It’s been a while, Regal shut down and reopened again, studios have stopped delaying movies, and Regal has seemingly resumed theater renovations and upgrades.
About a month ago, a few of us noticed that IMAX showtimes at Pointe Orlando suddenly stopped on June 4th, as no IMAX showings for Conjuring or In the Heights were scheduled, while very other IMAX in the state had those movies scheduled. Perhaps it was a fluke, so we waited a while, until one of us called Pointe Orlando and they confirmed our speculation that the IMAX theater would close for renovation on June 4th, and it would reopen in time for F9 on June 25th. Laser upgrade was mentioned by name, but it was unknown if they would receive single laser or dual laser. Also with the relatively short closure time, we assumed that it would be a partial renovation of the projection system only, and that the rest of the upgrade package such as audio and screen would be replaced at a later date.
However, IMAX showtimes popped up shortly after. Management then told us that the IMAX would be open on June 4th, and that no laser upgrade was scheduled, they talked as if the previously confirmed renovation never was. The renovation was supposedly canceled and pushed to a later date. With the release schedule ramping up to full speed again with huge titles coming out soon, the next opportunity for renovation might not be until early 2022. It might be a bummer, but this might give them more time to fulfill our wishes and instal dual laser instead of single laser, and it will be worth the wait when it does come. On the bright side, the cold and dark ages of COVID have apparently ended and things are moving again. We continue to watch things like a hawk and we will update you all when we receive any concrete info.
