Reformulate Blue Badge Laws to Consider Needs Over Age for Children

The Issue

This petition begins with a story—my story. I am the mother of Myla, a 2-year-old with an extremely rare genetic condition, affecting her both physically and cognitively. Myla can't sit, crawl, stand, or walk on her own and relies on physical equipment for comfort and support in her daily life. This equipment is bulky, heavy, and must travel with us wherever we go. Despite Myla's dire need, we've been denied a Blue Badge twice simply because she is under three years old.

The current Blue Badge legislation is failing children like Myla. The law currently does not consider the unique needs and challenges associated with children under three living with physical disabilities. Their struggles do not minimise due to their age; if anything, they are amplified.

We urge the authorities to reconsider and reformulate the Blue Badge laws in order to focus not on the age, but on the specific needs and necessities of disabled children. Young age should not be a disqualifying factor for children with severe disabilities who are unable to walk or navigate without their equipment.

Granting the Blue Badge to eligible children irrespective of their age would remove undue burden on the families, and would offer these children a fair chance at manoeuvring through their environments with greater ease, ultimately improving their quality of life.

I request the support of everyone who believes in equitable access for all, regardless of age. Stand with us in our fight for reform. Please sign this petition and help us advocate for much-needed change in the Blue Badge laws. Let's ensure these laws cater to the needs of every child and not just based on their age.
