Our present youth justice system, predominantly focused on punitive measures, often forgets that it deals with a highly impressionable and vulnerable demographic, our children. It tends to overlook the impacts of harsh punitive practices; which as evidence suggests, lead to increased recidivism, limited access to education and jobs, and long-lasting psychological trauma among incarcerated youth. In the United States alone, studies reveal that roughly 76% young offenders released from residential facilities are re-arrested within three years (National Institute of Justice). This demonstrates the urgent need to shift our system's focus from just penalizing to rehabilitating. There is an urgent call for a change in how young people are treated in the justice process. Reforms must be implemented to replace the carceral and punitive approaches with comprehensively rehabilitative programs. These changes will not only reduce crime rates but also help these young individuals to reintegrate into society as productive citizens.
