The Issue

Once upon a time, the DMV provided practical solutions for drivers in Washington D.C. who, due to budget constraints, found themselves struggling to pay their speeding tickets. During these times, if you were in good standing with the DMV, you could get on a payment plan to settle your fines within your financial means. However, those days have seemingly been discarded to the detriment of all local drivers. Now, under the looming presence of city council decisions, we find ourselves trapped in a sprawling network of speed cameras installed across the city, making it almost impossible to drive without accumulating fines.

The consequence is clear: Washington D.C. has become an expensive speed trap. The relentless issuing of speeding tickets has placed an unjust and unbearable financial burden on countless residents and commuting workers, especially hard-working Uber and Lyft drivers. It was once feasible to manage these fines gracefully, but the introduction and strict enforcement of these cameras have turned the city into a proverbial minefield for drivers.

We understand the need for laws and the necessity of adhering to speed limits to ensure safety for everyone. However, the methods by which these tickets are collected and the punitive measures for those unable to pay on time have become excessive. Forcing individuals to wait 90 days until their tickets are eligible for collections, with accrued interest, exacerbates financial strains for many. This heightens the injustice experienced, particularly by those who are already struggling to make ends meet.

We urge the Washington D.C. City Council to revisit and reform the current system of managing speeding tickets. Our proposal is simple yet effective: reinstate the payment plans with the DMV as they previously existed and ensure they are accessible to everyone in good standing. By doing so, residents can manage fines in a reasonable manner without the looming threat of exorbitant interest rates and damaging credit impacts.

This petition seeks to establish fairness and restore a balanced system that reflects the spirit of the law: one that serves the people rather than entraps them. We ask for a reassessment of the current approach and immediate action to alleviate the excessive financial pressure placed on drivers in Washington D.C.

Please sign this petition to bring about necessary reforms and to help create a more just and equitable approach for all Washington D.C. drivers. Your support is crucial in making our voices heard and implementing change that benefits the community at large.
