Reform Visiting Policies of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation

Reform Visiting Policies of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
The Issue
The current visiting policies enforced by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) are unnecessarily strict, causing discomfort to visitors who are required to sit at a 90° angle during in-person visits. This policy not only strains physical comfort but also affects the emotional well-being of both visitors and inmates, hindering their ability to maintain meaningful connections. Furthermore, there is a lack of transparency and formal process in policy changes within CDCR. Changes can occur frequently without clear justifications or public input.
According to a report by Vera Institute of Justice, maintaining strong family ties during incarceration reduces recidivism rates by up to 13% (Vera Institute of Justice, 2016). Therefore, it's crucial that CDCR revises its visiting policies for better comfort and connection between inmates and their loved ones.
We call on CDCR to reform its visiting rules for more humane treatment towards visitors. We also demand that they establish a more formal procedure for policy changes with restrictions on frequency and reasons behind such changes. This will ensure fairness in decision-making processes affecting thousands across the state.
Please sign this petition if you believe in fair treatment for all Californians affected by these policies.
