Reform Vehicle Excise Duty to Reflect Actual Road Usage and Environmental Impact

The Issue

I am a driver who only covers around 4,000 miles a year, yet my vehicle excise duty costs me £320 - the same as someone driving 40,000 miles a year. The other driver is causing ten times more environmental damage and producing ten times more congestion than me. This isn't fair.

The current system of vehicle excise duty doesn't reflect the real-world impact of road usage. It fails to take into account the amount of pollution produced or the level of congestion caused by different drivers. Instead, it charges all drivers equally regardless of how much they use their vehicles.

We propose that this tax be scrapped and instead be levied on fuels. By doing so, those who use their vehicles most frequently will pay more proportionately for their road usage and environmental impact. This would discourage unnecessary travel and encourage slower driving speeds which could result in less pollution, less road damage, and fewer accidents.

Moreover, this change could also incentivize more people to use public transport as an alternative means of transportation which would further reduce our collective carbon footprint.

According to Transport & Environment (2018), road transport is one of Europe's biggest climate problems accounting for one-fifth of its total emissions – with cars representing 44% alone!

It's time we made our tax system fairer while also taking meaningful steps towards addressing climate change by making those who cause the most harm pay their fair share. Please sign this petition today if you believe in a just system that reflects actual road usage while promoting environmentally friendly practices.
