The Issue

India's progression as a nation should be defined by the principles of meritocracy, opportunity, and fairness. Currently, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) imposes an upper age limit for candidates vying for civil service positions. This restriction stands as a barrier for many capable and dedicated individuals who aspire to serve their country but are sidelined because of an arbitrary age limit.

Let's consider the facts: The current upper age limit for general category candidates is 32 years, with some relaxations for other categories. Yet, in today's evolving job market and educational landscape, many individuals are pursuing higher education and gaining invaluable life experiences later in life. Statistics from NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Statistics show an increase in adults returning to education or transitioning careers in their 30s. Denying these aspirants the chance to serve simply due to their age overlooks the diverse experiences and talents they bring to the table.

Removing the upper age limit would not only promote inclusivity but would also harness the intelligence, dedication, and leadership qualities of older candidates. Countries like the USA, UK, and Canada have already recognized the value of experience and abolished age constraints for several public servant roles. These nations have benefited greatly from the influx of experienced professionals in their governmental systems.

Furthermore, the move would align with India's constitutional values and its commitment to a diverse and equitable society. As citizens, it's our duty to advocate for a system where capabilities and merit, not age, decide who gets to serve our nation.

Join us in urging the Government of India and the UPSC to reassess and remove the upper age limit for aspirants. Let us pave the way for a more inclusive, fair, and dynamic public service sector. Sign this petition to support merit-based progress and inclusivity in our civil services.
