Reform University Policy to Include Open Work Permits for Iranian Students

The Issue

Dear SOLUS Staff,

We hope this email finds you well.

We are writing on behalf of the Iranian students at Queen's University to bring to your attention a new government policy regarding open work permits for Iranian nationals. This policy, introduced as a temporary measure, allows Iranian visitors in Canada to obtain an open work permit from 2023 to 2025 without the need to provide employer details. It is important to note that this open work permit is not related to being the spouse of a student, nor is it the traditional closed work permit.

Given that this is a new category created by the Canadian government, most universities have recognized this type of new open work permit and granted domestic tuition fees to those who qualify. We believe that Queen's University should reconsider its current policy and update the eligibility criteria to include this new type of open work permit.

We kindly request that you review this situation and consider making the necessary updates to your policies to reflect the new government rules. This would ensure that students holding this specific permit are treated equitably and can benefit from the same fee exemptions as those with other eligible work permits.

Thank you for your understanding and attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
Iranian Students Community
