The Issue

This week Our Lives changed forever when  Our Beautiful Minnie lost her life to a single punch delivered with no warning or provocation. The impact of that moment has left  us all devastated , not just because of the sudden and violent nature of her passing . What compounded our grief was that the assailant has been bailed twice  and in reality a Man  aged 53 will not actually receive any real punishment for his actions and given the statistics on this , a decision  will be made that will  trivialize Minnie’s death and leave her family  and friends  searching for justice.

This harsh reality reflects a broader inconsistency in UK law, where offenders in 'one-punch' manslaughter cases often escape jail time, as opposed to those convicted of grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, who face sentences up to life imprisonment. Both crimes carry similar brutal consequences for the victims and their families, yet they are not treated with the same gravity under the law.

According to the Office for National Statistics, between 2019 and 2022, there were over 100 cases recorded as 'one-punch' fatalities, with a significant proportion resulting in sentences that did not involve incarceration. Such disparity undermines public confidence in our justice system and sends a distressing message to victims’ families: that their loved ones' lives are valued less.

We acknowledge that these cases can be complex, with factors such as intent and previous criminal history playing a critical role in sentencing. However, the lack of a mandatory custodial sentence for 'one-punch' manslaughter casts doubt on our commitment to justice and leaves families in despair.

Therefore, we urge the UK Ministry of Justice to reform sentencing guidelines to ensure mandatory custodial sentences for offenders convicted of 'one-punch' manslaughter. Such reform is essential not just for ensuring justice for victims and their families but also for deterring potential offenders, thus protecting the public and safeguarding lives.

Please sign this petition to support a judicial reform that brings fairness and justice to those who have lost loved ones to senseless and preventable acts of violence. Together, we can push for a legal system that truly reflects the severity of these tragic losses.
