The Issue

As a disabled resident of Tulsa County living on a limited income, I am confronted with the overwhelming challenge of meeting my property tax obligations. Like many seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities in our community, I am required to pay these taxes in two large installments each year. This system leaves me and countless others vulnerable to financial despair, the threat of losing our homes, and the inability to safeguard our most basic security.

Currently, Tulsa County mandates property tax payments in two sizeable chunks—a practice that imposes a heavy financial burden on low-income households. For many, this overwhelming demand can lead to severe financial strain and even the risk of losing their homes, as it requires a large outlay of money in a short span of time.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, around 15% of Tulsa County residents are aged 65 or older, many surviving on fixed incomes. Additionally, veterans and disabled individuals, integral members of our community, often live under stringent financial constraints. The current system does not accommodate the realities of their financial situations, pushing them into untenable economic positions.

Therefore, we urge Tulsa County officials to reform the current property tax payment system to allow monthly payment options. This change would alleviate the burden on residents by enabling them to manage their finances more effectively and prevent the unnecessary loss of homes. With a more flexible payment system, residents would have the opportunity to budget their expenses more judiciously, thereby maintaining their homes and preserving their sense of security.

Evidence from other counties that have adopted monthly or quarterly payment systems shows a noticeable decrease in delinquencies. This alternative promotes financial stability among residents and reduces the administrative burden on county offices.

Please support this vital initiative by signing this petition. Together, we can advocate for a fairer and more adaptable approach that reflects the needs and realities of our community.
