Reform the UK Electoral System for a Fairer Representation For All UK Voters

The Issue

Only 20% of the whole UK Population voted for Labour. Only 34% of those who voted chose Labour our voting system uses (FPTP) First Past The Post is Undemocratic, Proportional Representation is Democratic and is used in the majority of countries across the world.

Parliament plays a role in all aspects of our lives: from the laws that govern us and the services we use to how the UK is seen worldwide.

How we elect MPs to Westminster means that our parliament doesn’t represent Britain and our concerns can often be ignored. Yet we pride ourselves on our parliament as the mother of parliamentary democracy. Apart from the UK, France is the only other European democracy not to use some form of proportional representation for its state-wide elections.

The current UK electoral system reflects significant imbalances in representation. The recent election demonstrated that. Labour secured over 412 seats with only 34% of the country's vote, while Reform won just 5 seats despite acquiring 14.3% of total votes.

Labour only received 1/3rd of the vote yet won with a landslide. The LibDems have 71 seats with 12% and the SNP 9 seats with 3% how can that be deemed democratic by any right-thinking people

That is a stark demonstration of disproportionate representation indicative of an electoral procedure currently neglecting the foundational principle of democracy - each vote should have the same weight.

It's worth noting that over half of the countries on Earth already utilize some form of Proportional Representation. These nations have recognized the importance of fair representation and have implemented systems that better reflect the diverse views of their electorates.

Moreover, I firmly believe that the position of London Mayor should be chosen by the entire country, not just by London. This would ensure that the selection process is more inclusive and representative of the broader population as it is our capital city.

To address these critical issues, I am starting a petition on Change.org advocating for Proportional Representation and a fairer voting system. I urge you to support this initiative and help us bring about meaningful change.

This petition seeks immediate legislative review and necessary amendments to our electoral system to ensure balanced representations in accordance with vote percentages. Your support can initiate a change towards a fairer and more democratic society. Please sign the petition to make your vote count.
