The Issue

To our elected lawmakers,

We, the undersigned, call on Congress to propose a constitutional amendment that strengthens and modernizes the impeachment process to ensure real accountability for public officials who abuse their power.

Specifically, we urge the following changes:

1) Maintain the current simple majority requirement for impeachment in the House of Representatives.

2) Lower the threshold for conviction in the Senate from a two-thirds supermajority to a simple majority.

3) Ensure that any conviction in the Senate results automatically in both removal from office and permanent disqualification from holding future federal office — with no separate vote required.

The current system is broken. It allows powerful figures to evade consequences simply because of party loyalty in the Senate, even when the House of Representatives has clearly identified serious misconduct. Additionally, the requirement of a separate vote to bar someone from future office creates a dangerous loophole — allowing those who have committed impeachable offenses to run for office again.

This became painfully clear in the impeachment trials of former President Donald Trump. Though impeached by the House for serious abuses, he was not convicted in the Senate, not because of lack of evidence, but because of partisan division. As a result, he was allowed to seek the presidency again — despite having twice faced formal charges of misconduct.

Impeachment should be a meaningful check on power — not a symbolic gesture. It’s time to ensure that public officials are held to real standards of accountability.

We urge you to support this amendment and restore the power of the people to expect integrity from their leaders.
