Reform the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Parole Board Guidelines

Reform the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Parole Board Guidelines
The Issue
Derrick Deshawn Morris is currently incarcerated and being held by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Despite demonstrating remorse and making every effort to meet parole requirements, Derrick continues to be denied his freedom. This situation is not unique to him; it is a systemic issue that affects many inmates within the TDCJ system. The parole board's guidelines are often disregarded, leading to inconsistencies in their decisions. Offenders who have not shown signs of rehabilitation are released quickly while those who have made significant progress remain incarcerated.
This arbitrary application of justice does more than just keep individuals like Derrick from their families—it also undermines faith in our criminal justice system. In 2019 alone, over 80% of offenders eligible for parole were denied release on their first review by the TDCJ Parole Board (source: Texas Department of Criminal Justice Annual Review). This statistic starkly contrasts with the stated goal of these institutions—to rehabilitate offenders and reintegrate them into society.
Derrick has children waiting for him at home and loved ones eager for his return. He wants nothing more than an opportunity to prove himself as a law-abiding citizen and active family member. He is petitioning for a special review with the Parole Board in Austin because he is continuously being deemed a threat to society even though his records don’t reflect that. But he cannot do this without your help.
We call on you—the concerned citizens—to urge the TDCJ Parole Board to reform its guidelines ensuring they are consistently applied across all cases. Let us work together towards a fairer justice system that truly serves its purpose—rehabilitation rather than indefinite punishment.
Please sign this petition today; let's bring Derrick home and ensure others like him receive fair treatment from our justice system.
