Reform the Modernized Smith-Mundt Act

Reform the Modernized Smith-Mundt Act
The Issue
Many of my family have been seriously harmed by following paid propaganda for medical treatments. This experience has made me acutely aware of the potential dangers of the misinformation that proliferates through our media. In 2012, with the modernization of the Smith-Mundt Act, significant changes were made to how media outlets can broadcast information domestically, without the accountability that was once a cornerstone of media ethics. Prior to this amendment, the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 operated to prevent the U.S. Government from propagandizing its own citizens. However, the modernization lifted several restrictions, allowing information, once intended solely for foreign audiences, to be broadcast domestically without clear defenses against misinformation or 'fake news'. Canada did the same along with many other countries. No warning given.
This legislative shift subtly redefined boundaries for media content, stripping away previous limitations on domestic propaganda, and leaving news outlets without liability for false or misleading information that reaches the public. Such a lack of accountability in media communication has far-reaching implications. It not only skews public perception but also poses direct threats to public health, personal safety, and the democratic process.
According to a Pew Research study, trust in media has significantly declined in the last decade, and this legislative change has only exacerbated the problem. News outlets have gained room to operate with significantly less oversight, allowing them to present biased information that can deeply affect public opinion and potentially harm individuals who rely on these sources for making critical decisions.
Concrete steps need to be taken to address this issue by urging Congress to reinstate accountability measures that ensure media outlets adhere to true journalistic integrity. This could involve reinstating certain provisions of the original Smith-Mundt Act or introducing new regulations that fill the accountability gaps left by the 2012 amendment.
This petition calls for transparency, honesty, and accountability in the media. We must act now to protect citizens from propaganda that can negatively impact their lives, health, and understanding of the world. Please join in signing this petition to urge lawmakers to re-evaluate and reform the modernized Smith-Mundt Act, thereby safeguarding the public against misleading narratives.
