Reform the Misuse of the Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Act in Singapore
Reform the Misuse of the Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Act in Singapore
The Issue
I am writing this petition from a place of deep personal concern and distress. Recently, several of my relatives and friends were detained by officers from the Singapore Police Force (SPF) relating them to some 257 Bangkit gang. They were accused of being gang members, humiliated, and framed as part of a secret society. The most disheartening part is that they were given no opportunities to prove their innocence in any court of justice. Officers used violence and fear to substantiate their claims by misusing the Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Act (CLTPA).
The CLTPA is a law that allows for detention without trial for suspected criminals involved in activities like organized crime or drug trafficking. However, its misuse has led to severe violations of individuals' rights to voice their concerns or seek justice in an open court.
This misuse is not an isolated incident but reflects a broader pattern. According to Amnesty International's 2016/17 report on Singapore, there have been numerous cases where individuals are detained without trial under laws like CLTPA.
We believe that every individual deserves fair treatment under the law and should be granted due process rights regardless of accusations made against them. We call upon the government authorities in Singapore to reform how they use CLTPA, ensuring it does not infringe upon individuals' rights.
Please join us in standing up for justice and fairness by signing this petition today!
