Reform the Driving Test Marking System to Allow Two Major Faults
Reform the Driving Test Marking System to Allow Two Major Faults
The Issue
I recently took a driving test, which I failed due to a single major fault during a parallel park manoeuvre. Despite demonstrating excellent driving skills throughout the test and receiving no minor faults, one mistake cost me my pass. This experience is not unique to me and reflects an issue with the current marking system of driving tests.
The current system allows for up to 15 minor faults but fails candidates immediately if they commit even one major fault. This approach seems unjust when considering that many capable drivers are failing their tests over singular mistakes in complex manoeuvres, despite otherwise flawless performances.
A study by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) showed that in 2019/2020, over 1.6 million practical car tests were conducted in Great Britain with a pass rate of only 45.8%. The most common reason for failure was not observing properly at junctions - a single mistake leading to instant failure.
I propose that we reform the marking system on driving tests to allow two major faults before failing a candidate. This change would provide more balance between assessing overall capability and penalising isolated errors during complex manoeuvres.
