Reform the Child Maintenance Service Payment Standards

Reform the Child Maintenance Service Payment Standards
The Issue
This appeal stems from the personal stories of many men and women, including myself, who are faced with making unreasonable monthly payments to maintain our children. The Child Maintenance Service (CMS) system, branded by some as draconian, does not calculate payments in a manner that adequately accounts for the financial realities of divorced or separated parents. The prevailing narrative for many is a startling one: income levels and financial commitments are often disregarded, leading to unsustainable payment plans.
Current estimates indicate that there are almost 700,000 children in the UK for whom a parent pays child maintenance via CMS (Source: Department for Work and Pensions). For every one of these children, there's a story of two parents attempting to navigate a system that can feel unfair, opaque, and overwhelming. This isn't merely statistics - these are real families facing significant struggles.
Constructive change needs to be brought about. Our call is for the government to undertake a thorough review of, and debate on, the functioning of the Child Maintenance Service and the way it determines payments. This must be done with a view to create a system that is equitable, transparent, and considerate of the modern cost of living.
This is not a plea for an easy way out of our responsibilities. It's a call to ensure that the CMS can effectively serve its purpose: facilitating fair payments that truly serve the best interests of our children, whilst responding to the financial circumstances of both parents. Join us in advocating for a fairer Child Maintenance Service by signing this petition. Thanks
