Reform the broken job market in America

Reform the broken job market in America
The Issue
I am writing to respectfully urge you to consider introducing legislation aimed at bringing much-needed fairness, transparency, and accountability to the hiring process in the United States. As it stands, the job application process is deeply flawed—opaque, discouraging, and unnecessarily difficult for job seekers. While innovation continues to transform various sectors, recruitment practices remain outdated and unfair, demanding urgent reform.
As you are undoubtedly aware, the American people are suffering. Many are desperate to work and provide for their families, but due to the issues outlined below, countless individuals are struggling to secure employment. I propose the following changes to help improve the job application process and create a more equitable system for all candidates:
Eliminating Candidate Ghosting
It should be mandatory for employers to inform candidates of their application status. A timely and respectful update or rejection notice honors the time and energy applicants put into the process.
Clarity in Job Descriptions
Job postings must be clear, accurate, and professional. Vague or misleading descriptions discourage qualified individuals from applying and waste candidates’ time.
Realistic Job Requirements
Entry-level positions should reflect that status. Too often, “entry-level” roles demand several years of experience or advanced degrees, creating unnecessary barriers for those starting their careers.
Salary Transparency
Employers should be required to include salary ranges in job postings. This saves time for both applicants and employers, ensures financial expectations are aligned, and contributes to wage fairness and equity.
Accountability for Hiring Decisions
Companies should be required to document and justify candidate rejections. If reasonable justifications cannot be provided, the employer should be subject to review. This will help prevent discrimination and promote fairness.
Regulation and Oversight of Job Postings
Companies that repeatedly post the same job on multiple platforms for over a month should be investigated. With so many qualified people actively seeking work, there is little justification for prolonged vacancies. Often, this behavior indicates data harvesting or fraudulent practices. Companies found posting fake jobs or engaging in deceptive hiring practices should face serious penalties. As someone who has reported several such companies to the BBB, I can attest to the growing scale of this problem. It is a rampant epidemic, and if left unchecked, it will further inflate the unemployment rate in the coming months.
These reforms are not only reasonable—they are essential. The hiring process should reflect the values of respect, fairness, and transparency that our country aspires to uphold. I sincerely urge you to take action on this matter and introduce legislation that holds employers accountable and protects job seekers from exploitation.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you and hope we can work together to make meaningful changes that benefit all Americans.
Sincerely,
The American People
