I was born disabled, and I did not choose the body I live in nor the challenges it brings. Every day is a fight for survival and dignity, reliant not on any luxury but on basic necessity. The benefits I receive, such as prosthetic legs and foot shells, are not excessive—they are crucial tools that enable me to walk and lead a semblance of a normal life. However, our current Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and disability benefit system imposes restrictions that undermine my freedom and financial stability.

The system's outdated rules punish individuals with disabilities for making basic life choices, particularly when it comes to marriage. Under current regulations, marrying could result in a substantial reduction or complete loss of SSI benefits, pushing people further into poverty simply for choosing to spend their life with a partner. This draconian policy forces a choice between love and economic survival, one that no one should have to make.

Moreover, the asset limits imposed by SSI rules are unrealistically low, preventing individuals with disabilities from saving for emergencies or future needs. These asset restrictions trap beneficiaries in a cycle of poverty, unable to improve their lives or gain financial independence. It's not merely unjust; it's a systemic barrier that inhibits growth and prosperity.

In addition, privacy protections for beneficiaries need urgent attention. Often, individuals receiving benefits undergo intrusive and demeaning reviews, violating their privacy and dignity. The government should respect the privacy and decency of all its citizens, treating them with the respect they deserve.

Our plea calls for comprehensive SSI reform that includes:

1. Abolishing the marriage penalty to allow people with disabilities to marry without risking their financial support.
2. Increasing asset limits to reflect current economic realities, enabling individuals to save responsibly.
3. Enhancing privacy protections to safeguard beneficiaries from unnecessary and invasive reviews.

This reform is not just beneficial to recipients but also promotes a more inclusive and equitable society—one where dignity and financial security are prioritized.
