Reform SSDI for fairer and more accessible benefits

The Issue

Hello, and welcome to my petition!

I have Aspergers and mild Ulcerative colitis. Alongside these challenges, I face mental health issues that can complicate my ability to work consistently.

Unfortunately, the current structure of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in the United States creates unnecessary hurdles for people like me and those with more severe disabilities. We need to reform SSDI to make it more equitable and accessible to all disabled individuals.

The current SSDI system is fraught with delays and inadequacies that leave many disabled individuals struggling to survive. On average, only 35% of first-time applicants are approved, forcing many to endure lengthy appeals or to reapply. This process can take months or even years, during which time individuals are left without necessary financial support.

To ensure that SSDI truly serves those in need, I propose the following changes:

1. Implement a maximum 45-day decision window for all SSDI applications to minimize waiting times and provide prompt assistance to applicants.

2. Establish a minimum monthly payout of $2,500 for approved cases, ensuring that recipients can meet basic living expenses without undue hardship.

3. Eliminate any waiting period to appeal or reapply if an application is denied, streamlining the process and reducing stress on applicants.

4. Aim to increase the first-time application approval rate from 35% to around 65-70%. This change would reflect a more compassionate approach and trust in medical evaluations of disabilities.

These changes are crucial in helping disabled and disability-adjacent Americans who find it challenging to maintain employment. By reducing bureaucratic hurdles and friction points, we can make the process more efficient and less stressful for applicants, ensuring that those who are unable to support themselves due to disability are not left behind.

Join me in urging the relevant authorities to reform SSDI to make it fairer and more accessible for all. Sign this petition to show your support and help bring about much-needed change for disabled individuals in the United States.
