The Issue

My experience as a parent in the Corvallis School District has shown me that the special education system here is profoundly flawed. My 13-year-old child, who is part of this system, has been suspended multiple times, and each incident seems to be a direct result of his disability. It pains me to see that the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) put into place for him is not being followed. Instead of receiving support, my child is facing unjust discipline simply because the system cannot accommodate his needs.

Disciplining a child for actions linked to their disability is wrong and counterproductive. The school's failure to follow IEPs and treat special education students fairly is unacceptable. Every child deserves to be understood, supported, and given the opportunity to succeed. Yet, Corvallis School District's handling of special education is falling short of these fundamental educational principles, leaving children feeling alienated and discouraged.

Statistics indicate that approximately 30% of special education students in America are subject to suspension, and, alarmingly, schools frequently fail to adhere to IEPs, per reports from the National Center for Learning Disabilities. Corvallis is no exception, and it’s time for change. Our children deserve better support and protection of their rights.

I urge the Corvallis School District and its administrators to take immediate action, ensuring that IEPs are faithfully implemented and that staff receive training to understand and cater to the diverse needs of special education students. These steps will help prevent further wrongful suspensions and help accommodate every child's unique learning path.

Together, we can create an inclusive and supportive environment where special education students are afforded the dignity, respect, and success they deserve. Please sign this petition to demand the necessary reforms within the Corvallis School District's special education system. With your support, we can make a significant and lasting impact on our children's future and well-being. Sign and share to advocate for our kids' rights and future.
