As a concerned parent, seeing the need for students to have their phones at hand in case of emergencies such as lockdowns or personal issues is undeniable. The current phone policy in our schools - a policy that greatly restricts phone access during school hours - lacks due consideration for student safety and personal needs.

It has become increasingly evident that in today's digital age, access to mobile phones is not merely a matter of convenience but a potential lifeline in times of crises. According to National School Safety and Security Services, a mobile phone can serve as a crucial link to authorities and parents during an emergency (1). Moreover, studies indicate that cell phones can be used as effective learning tools, potentially enhancing student engagement (2).

Although we recognize the need to manage distractions in classrooms, it is equally important that policies adapt to changing circumstances and societal needs. Hence, I urge you to consider updating school phone policies to ensure they safeguard student safety and support their needs at all times.
