REFORM ROBLOX CORPORATION: Powering Greed over Imagination

REFORM ROBLOX CORPORATION: Powering Greed over Imagination
The Issue
We are calling on Roblox Corporation to overhaul its predatory monetization, invasive data collection policies, and failing moderation systems. The platform has drifted from its "Powering Imagination" roots toward a model that prioritizes profit over the safety and satisfaction of its community.
1. Exploitative Monetization
Roblox has made it increasingly difficult for independent creators to exist.
By requiring recurring Roblox Premium 1100/2200 subscriptions just to keep 2D and 3D clothing on sale, Roblox is preventing opportunities for smaller creators. Roblox's new update charges players 10 Robux to upload 2D Clothing, and then ANOTHER 10 Robux to list items on sale — all while requiring a paid subscription. A recurring Roblox Premium subscription is a blatant barrier to entry for young creators, and not financially available to all players around the world.
2. Invasive Data Practices & Security Failures
The requirement for Face Scans and Government ID via third-party services like Persona is an extreme overreach for a gaming platform meant for children.
Despite claims of data deletion, transparency regarding data sharing with government entities remains murky. Roblox's third-part platform, "Persona", claims to delete biometric data within 30 days, however it has been found that IDs and Face Scans are kept for far longer, and retained within their servers posing a serious data risk if a breach were to occur (Roblox has already suffered significant data breaches).
These "safety" measures do little to actually deter bad actors while effectively gatekeeping basic social features like voice chat behind a privacy paywall. Players should not have to hand over their personal data to Roblox and its respective third-party just to access basic social features such as text chat, voice chat, and even uploading content. Nearly all user accessibility features within Roblox require an age verification, forcing their data to be liable to data breaches.
3. Negligent Moderation and Disregard of the Community
The recent forced transition from static faces to animated versions (without the option for refunds), completely disregards the aesthetic and financial choices of the players. Players did not ask to be stripped of their aesthetic choices, they have put their trust in Roblox by purchasing a static accessory, only for Roblox to forcibly change their preference to an animated version. This animation variant of face accessories came with numerous bugs. Roblox has since not corrected the issues relating to new animated accessories.
Furthermore, the reliance on automated bots has led to a plague of "false positive" bans. With a one-time appeal system often handled by the same AI, players are losing accounts they’ve spent years (and often hundreds to thousands of dollars) building with no human recourse. It is highly unjust that players be subject to the decision of an AI when appealing decisions, and even encountering moderations. Player appeals are never read by a human agent, and are instead denied by an AI (often within minutes of sending the appeal) and given no chance to send another appeal.
Our Demands
- Remove the Premium Requirement for keeping clothing items on the marketplace.
- Cease Mandatory ID/Biometric Scans for basic social features and content uploading.
- Implement Human Moderation in the appeals process to ensure players aren't silenced by faulty AI systems.
- Offer Refunds for forced cosmetic changes that fundamentally alter purchased items.
Roblox, it is time to listen to the community that built you. Stop treating your players as data points and start treating them as the creators they are. Children are at stake here.
