Reform Ridgewood's Parking Enforcement to Reduce Excessive Ticketing

The Issue

As residents and local business patrons of Ridgewood, the harsh reality of receiving parking tickets has affected the community negatively. In a shocking reveal reported by NorthJersey.com, Ridgewood was identified as the most ticketed town north or Route 4 in all of Bergen County, with the total number of tickets exceeding 15,000 in just 12 months.

A video sharing this concerning truth garnered over 300,000 views on our local Instagram page, drawing attention from citizens who expressed how they decided to stop shopping downtown due to the skyrocketing number of parking tickets distributed. This detrimental impact coupled with the distribution of a staggering 40+ tickets per day in the small town of 25,000 people, stands as a testament to the need for swift reform.

This situation is personal for us, as we've been using our social media page to shed light on this issue. We feel a sense of responsibility to address this matter and fight for a change, not only for ourselves but also for the benefit of our community members and local businesses in Ridgewood that suffer the negative economic impacts of restrictive parking enforcement.

We urge local authorities and policymakers to revisit and reform Ridgewood's parking enforcement methods, making them fairer and less likely to lead to a ticket. This reform is necessary for maintaining the vibrancy of the downtown area, and for preserving the ease with which our residents should be able to live their everyday lives.

Here are couple ways Ridgewood could take a good step in the right direction:

  • Month long Free Parking "Holiday"
  • Lower parking fee cost
  • Change the hours for paid parking
  • Add more 15 minute parking spots
