Reform Revocation Laws: Acknowledge Probation/Parole as Time Served

The Issue

My loved one, like many others, has experienced first-hand the challenges and injustices of current revocation laws. Our current system neglects to consider probation or parole as time served, often resulting in unnecessarily prolonged sentences. This system does not only affect the individuals serving their time but also their loved ones who are left to wrestle with the emotional weight.

It is worth noting that the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with over 2.2 million people in prison as of 2020 (source: World Prison Brief). Furthermore, a large portion of these individuals are serving time due to supervisory sanctions (probation and parole violations). However, many of this population have truly changed their lives around, contributing positively to their communities and working diligently towards fulfilling their probation or parole requirements.

Recognizing probation and parole as time served isn't just about reducing prison populations; it also has the potential to foster rehabilitation, support reentry into society, and restore justice in a system that often overlooks those who need it the most.

We urge lawmakers to reevaluate the current laws on revocation and put forward legislation that acknowledges probation and parole as time served. Sign our petition to take a step towards a more forgiving and rehabilitative justice system.
