Reform RCMP's Approach to Toxic Drug Overdose Investigations in Canada

Reform RCMP's Approach to Toxic Drug Overdose Investigations in Canada
The Issue
This petition comes from a place of deep personal pain. My brother, Clinton Twan, tragically lost his life in January 2024, after unknowingly ingesting Fentanyl, a drug he did not normally use. After his passing, he was robbed of all personal effects, down to the shoes from his feet. Despite the circumstances, the RCMP's investigation into his death was far from comprehensive and the person responsible remains free. This is not just a personal tragedy, but a societal one.
Adding insult to injury, Clinton's death was handled without the urgency and seriousness it deserved. The trauma inflicted on our family deepened when no one was held accountable for his death. We are not alone in this horrific experience; other victims and families are also crying out for justice for similar cases.
In 2020 alone, British Columbia reported 1,724 deaths by drug overdose, a death rate of 33.4 per 100,000 individuals, the majority being men aged 30 to 59. Yet, in these overwhelming numbers, the police's response has often been inadequate and inconsistent (source: British Columbia Coroners Service).
We urgently demand a reform in how the RCMP investigate toxic drug overdose deaths. The suppliers providing these lethal substances should be held accountable - their actions are no less than homicide and attempted homicide. The reckless distribution of these drugs that lead to unexpected ends, as in the case of my dear brother Clint, should be vehemently pursued and prosecuted.
It is high time we bring the change needed to prevent another life from needlessly falling prey to the toxic drug crisis. Please, support us in this cause, for Clinton, and for all others who have suffered similar fates. Sign this petition to advocate for a proactive law enforcement response and holding the guilty accountable for drug-related deaths.
