Reform punitive policies at Success Academy HSLA schools
The Issue
At Success Academy HSLA Manhattan, along with other HSLA schools, we as students are feeling increasingly disheartened by the harsh and unfair policies that seem to prioritize discipline over our well-being and education. Imagine being in a learning environment where your every move is tracked, where minor infractions lead to harsh consequences, and where speaking up about your concerns only results in being met with rudeness from staff.
Our school has implemented body trackers, a measure that is intrusive and makes many of us uncomfortable. It doesn’t foster an environment of trust or respect, but rather one of suspicion and control. Such invasive policies are not conducive to productive learning and could potentially violate our privacy rights.
Moreover, the enforcement of these minor and often unreasonable rules has led to mandatory extension of the school day by half an hour, punishing students collectively for minor infractions. Environmental studies and education experts suggest that longer school days do not necessarily correlate with better student outcomes and can, in fact, lead to increased stress and lower levels of student engagement (Source: Brookings Institution, "Does time matter? Comparing the impact of educational hours on learning outcomes," 2020).
More concerning is the school's approach to discipline, purportedly stating that if a student accumulates four detentions, they automatically face suspension. By using such severe punitive measures, the school risks alienating students and diminishing their academic enthusiasm, which is contrary to the nurturing, supportive philosophy that educational institutions should have.
Teachers, too, are reportedly unsupportive when students voice their concerns, opting instead to dismiss legitimate student grievances. This creates a toxic atmosphere that discourages open communication, a crucial element in any educational setting.
We propose a revision of these policies, calling for:
1. Removal of body trackers: Build trust and ensure privacy by eliminating this intrusive measure.
2. Review of minor rule implementations: Engage students in discussions to identify what rules are truly beneficial or in need of reform.
3. Reformation of disciplinary processes: Implement restorative justice practices which focus on mediation and constructive feedback rather than immediate punitive measures.
4. Establish a student and faculty committee to regularly review school policies, ensuring a balanced and fair approach to discipline.
By addressing these issues, we can foster a more supportive and effective educational environment. We deserve a school system that supports us to thrive, not one that imposes unreasonable burdens.
