Reform Property Tax Foreclosure Laws Nationwide
The Issue
My life was uprooted when I lost my home due to property tax foreclosure. My story is not unique; countless individuals and families across the United States endure the same devastating experience each year. This underscores the pressing need to reform property tax foreclosure laws on a federal level. Current regulations can be overly punitive, disproportionately impacting those who, like me, struggle to keep up with the financial demands of homeownership, therefore, we demand reform.
In the year 2015 alone, approximately 36,300 properties were tax-foreclosed in the largest 3,141 U.S. counties - a notable increase of 9% from the previous year (Source: The National Tax Lien Association). The impact on individual homeowners is harsh and lasting, as losing one's home can cause long-term economic, physical, and psychological stress.
We believe there are viable alternatives to the current system that better balance the needs for local governments to collect taxes and the rights of homeowners to keep their homes. Options may include increased leniency for struggling homeowners, payment plans, or caps on foreclosure for minor tax delinquencies.
Join us in urging our nation's lawmakers to reform property tax foreclosure laws. The status quo is heartbreaking and inequitable. Your signature will send a clear message that a homeowner's right to shelter should not be stripped away because of an inability to pay property taxes. Please, sign the petition today.
