At 7:30 a.m. today, we gathered in front of the courthouse to demand justice for Lorenso Sanchez and urge lawmakers to reform Proposition 57. The peaceful protest brought together families, advocates, and supporters determined to give voice to victims of violent juvenile crimes.
Kings County Supervisor Richard Valle stood alongside us to receive more than 10,000 petition signatures, gathered in support of “Lorenso’s Law”—a legislative proposal aimed at revisiting how violent crimes by juveniles are prosecuted under Prop 57. Valle has pledged to pass the signatures on to the appropriate lawmakers in hopes of finding a champion to carry the law forward.
Today’s court hearing, however, yielded no new developments. The case was postponed to September 8 at 8:15 a.m., after the minor’s attorney stated she needed additional time to complete her investigation. Many supporters expressed frustration at the delay, as the process feels stalled. We feel like we’re at a standstill. It’s all a waiting game now. We’re asking the judge handling this case not to be lenient. Lorenso lost his life at just 17. We will never get him back, we won’t ever see or hear him again.
The Sanchez family and supporters are planning a peaceful protest in Sacramento soon, inviting surrounding communities and families affected by similar tragedies to join. Our goal is to raise continued awareness and ensure that victims like Lorenso are not forgotten. We don’t want to go silent. We need to speak up—not just for Lorenso, but for all the lives lost due to senseless violence.
We will continue to call for accountability and legislative change to prevent future tragedies and to honor Lorenso’s memory with action.
