Reform Prisons to Provide Comprehensive Resources for Inmate Rehabilitation

The Issue

Our current prison system fails in a fundamental purpose: rehabilitation. Currently, the focus on punitive measures over rehabilitative ones only further engrains unhealthy cycles, rather than breaking them. To bring about change, inmates should have access to counseling and education; they should be placed in safe environments, with organization by the nature of crime committed. Understanding the human condition and healing trauma are essential in reducing recidivism. It's also vital that we acknowledge the basic rights of every inmate to healthy food, clean water, and professional health and dental care. Much of the crime committed stems from a deficit in these basic needs and rights. U.S Department of Justice reported in 2017 that over 83% of inmates released were arrested at least once in the 9 years after their release, signifying a serious fault in our rehabilitative approach. In the spirit of creating a more humane and beneficial society, we call for a comprehensive prison reform that addresses these issues. Your support can push the lawmaking bodies to seriously consider a move away from a purely punitive system. Please sign this petition.
