The Issue
Our beloved pets deserve better. My in-laws' elderly dog, once healthy and full of life, faced seizures after her routine rabies vaccination and ultimately had to be put down, all for the sake of adhering to outdated rabies vaccine mandates. This heartbreak is further compounded by the inexplicable reality that my own dog, after receiving a one-year rabies vaccination in 2019, showed immunity years later in 2023 through titer testing. It doesn't stop there. A friend's tea-cup Yorkie experienced relentless shaking post-vaccination. These are not isolated incidents, but rather indicative of a larger systemic issue forcing us, as responsible pet owners, to comply with outdated vaccination laws that can deeply affect our pets' quality of life and even cost them their lives.
In Pennsylvania, pet owners like myself are grappling with the implications of these regulations that mandate a three-year rabies vaccine despite emerging evidence supporting longer-lasting immunity. While current protocols dictate a booster if a pet is exposed to rabies—even if previously vaccinated—this doesn't address the growing concern that our pets may suffer adverse effects from unnecessary vaccinations. Titer testing, a modern approach to measuring existing immunity, indicates that the rabies vaccine may indeed last much longer than the three-year cycle currently imposed by law.
Scientific evidence and technological advancements show us that our approach to animal vaccinations need not remain stagnant. Experts in veterinary medicine are increasingly recognizing the role titer testing can play in tailoring a more individualized vaccine regimen for our pets, reducing the risk of adverse reactions while still maintaining public health safety against rabies.
This petition addresses Eric Nelson and other state legislators in Pennsylvania, urging them to re-evaluate the current rabies vaccination laws. We propose a legislative review to incorporate titer testing as a viable alternative to the rigid vaccine schedule, allowing pet owners the flexibility to determine the appropriate timing for vaccinations based on scientific evidence of immunity. The goal is to foster an adaptive regulatory environment, aligning the law with current scientific understanding and reducing unnecessary harm to our cherished companions.
Join us in advocating for a reasonable approach to pet vaccinations. Let's ensure the health and well-being of our pets and prevent further tragedies. Please sign this petition to propel this crucial change and safeguard our pets from avoidable harm.
