Reform Patient Treatment and Improve Equipment at Cornell Regional Hospital

The Issue

The Cornwall Regional Hospital in my own personal experience and countless others, has systematically failed to uphold the most fundamental aspects of their duty - to provide compassionate, respectful, high-quality care. As a patient, I was subjected to dismissive attitudes from the hospital staff when expressing my pain. My pleas for help fell on deaf ears, making me feel invisible and unheard at a time when I was at my most vulnerable. This is not acceptable in any healthcare institution, less so in a hospital that has the responsibility to provide care for the people residing in this region.

Despite numerous reports highlighting these issues, the hospital maintains its sub-par standard of care, demonstrating a significant disregard for patient rights. The substandard equipment adds to this progressive deterioration in healthcare provision. In a study by the healthcare quality alliance, patient satisfaction is inversely linked to equipment standard (Healthcare Quality Alliance, 2020). The continued usage of outdated and poorly maintained equipment by the Cornell Regional Hospital leaves its patients at unnecessary risk and is indicative of a systemic failure to prioritize patient care.

This petition emphasizes the urgent need for reform in the treatment protocols within the Cornell Regional Hospital, an improvement in the quality of their equipment, and a revision of the hospital's current pattern of patient disregard. The objective is simple - to ensure respectable, empathic, and quality care for all. Your signature can contribute to instigating this much-needed change. Sign the petition today.I personally encountered a series of distressing incidents involving a nurse named Sue. During one visit, while experiencing chest pain that had lasted for an hour, I informed her that I had taken Tylenol 20 minutes earlier. Her response was disrespectful—she dropped her pen on the table, leaned back in her chair, and seemed visibly agitated. Intimidated as a foreigner unfamiliar with my rights or options, I asked her whether I should leave, to which she curtly replied, "Yes," without offering any guidance or advising me to stay in the waiting room. I left the hospital in panic, pain, and fear, praying nothing worse would happen.

In a separate incident, this same nurse folded her arms and told me she didn’t care if I reported her, asserting that “nothing’s going to happen.” This brazen attitude left me feeling powerless and distrustful of the system. Moreover, I fear the integrity of my medical records. In Jamaica, it’s widely believed that sensitive information can be accessed for a price, especially from foreigners, due to the value of American currency.

I also witnessed a terrifying scene where a man crying for help and vomiting uncontrollably was yelled at by staff and told to “stay in one place,” instead of receiving urgent medical care. These incidents reveal a disturbing pattern of negligence and mistreatment that must be addressed immediately.
