Reform Nebraska's Child Protective Services and Judicial System

Reform Nebraska's Child Protective Services and Judicial System
The Issue
Our lives were turned upside down when our daughter was taken from us by Child Protective Services (CPS) due to a tragic misunderstanding. Instead of receiving the mental health support she desperately needed, our family was separated. This experience highlighted deep flaws in our local judicial and protective systems, flaws that others in Fairbury, Nebraska, might also be grappling with.
In recent years, many parents in our community have echoed concerns about the inadequate resources available for dealing with troubled teens. Often, it seems that parents are left with few options but to watch as their children spiral out of control, unable to adequately discipline or offer the necessary guidance without fear of punitive repercussions themselves.
We need a more balanced approach in Nebraska where parents have more rights to appropriately discipline their children. Presently, teenagers seem to face minimal consequences for breaking laws, often leaving parents to bear the brunt of legal actions. It is crucial that the judicial system recognizes the shared responsibility of both parents and teenagers, potentially incorporating legal consequences or mandatory mental health classes for youths involved in legal infractions.
The lack of comprehensive resources and assistance for families dealing with these challenges means that many children, like our daughter, may not receive timely mental health interventions. Instead, families are sometimes fractured under the weight of systemic shortcomings.
Our story is not unique, and we know many others face similar challenges. To prevent further heartbreak, we urge reforms in Nebraska’s police force, judicial system, and CPS. These institutions should collaborate to offer effective resources for families, ensuring that teenagers cannot evade accountability while still prioritizing their mental well-being.
Help us bring about these necessary changes so that no family has to endure what we have gone through. Please sign this petition to support a reformation of Nebraska's systems to prioritize family unity and effective, compassionate intervention for struggling teens.
