Reform Milwaukee County Family Court now

Reform Milwaukee County Family Court now
The Issue
As a pro se party with special needs children, I am appalled by the current state of the Milwaukee County Family Court. Guardians ad Litem (GALs) and judges, often with no formal education on trauma, are making decisions that impact the lives of children without understanding the profound and lasting effects of emotional abuse and coercive control. These decisions can silence the cries for help from children who are most in need of safety and justice.
At present, the court's leniency towards non-custodial parents, even those with histories of domestic violence or restraining orders, is alarming. The prevalent belief that someone can be abusive towards the other parent yet still be a suitable caregiver simply defies logic and justice. This system needs reform to prioritize the safety and emotional well-being of children above all else.
Our goals in proposing this petition are threefold:
Firstly, we need a trauma-informed system with judges and GALs trained in recognizing the signs and impacts of trauma, and understanding the profound implications of domestic violence and coercive control on children and families.
Secondly, improved accessibility for those with disabilities is crucial. Many pro se parties, including parents with special needs children, face significant barriers in understanding and navigating the system. Ensuring ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance in all aspects of court proceedings is vital for fair and just outcomes.
Finally, child safety must be prioritized over outdated notions of parental rights, especially when a parent poses a direct threat to the child's well-being.
We need the support of our community in Milwaukee to bring attention to these issues and initiate change. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a family court system that truly protects the interests of children and provides a just and empathetic process for all involved. Please join us in calling for these essential reforms now.
