I am a survivor of a system that has failed us continuously: Michigan's justice system and child protective services. From first-hand experience as well as observation, I have witnessed a tragic cycle of negligence and a heartbreaking disregard for children's wellbeing. Children, both innocent and defenseless, have been left in unsafe homes, and the perpetrators of these egregious acts barely receive a slap on the wrist. Our children deserve better. They deserve protection, kindness, and justice. How much suffering must they endure before a meaningful change is enacted?

It is time we call for a comprehensive reform in our justice system and child protective services. This involves enforcing the law without bias, holding unfaithful public servants accountable, and prioritizing the health and well-being of our children above all else. In many unfortunate cases, children lose their lives due to the lack of care, attention, and action from these institutions. Those who neglect their duty and endanger children's lives should be held liable for child endangerment.

In Michigan alone, in 2018, approximately 37,000 children were victims of child abuse or neglect (source: Child Protective Services of Michigan). This number is untenable and shows the urgency of revamping our broken system.

We cannot let judges' personal perspectives and biases affect children's futures. Instead, rulings and decisions should be made solely based on what is in a child's best interest, following not only the spirit but also the letter of the law.
