Reform Laws to Protect Grooming Gang Victims from Court Ordeals

Reform Laws to Protect Grooming Gang Victims from Court Ordeals

The Issue

I, like many others, am deeply disturbed by a national scandal involving grooming gangs in our country. These horrific acts of violence have impacted countless victims, leaving them not only traumatized by the abuse itself, but also too often burdened by ineffectual systems of justice. This petition is personal to me: it's about seeking justice for victims and, ultimately, restoring the integrity of our society.

Our current legal structure mandates that victims confront their abusers in court. This secondary victimization can cause severe emotional distress and further perpetuates a culture of fear and silence. Unfairly, this occurs even in cases where there is compelling and tangible evidence, including DNA results, witness testimonies, and photographic proofs.

A 2017 report by the Children's Commissioner found that up to 19,000 children have been sexually groomed in England over the past year alone. Despite this horrifying statistic, the failure rate of cases going to trial is still shockingly high (King's College London, 2019). Clearly, something needs to change.

We're asking for a modification of our justice system to allow the Crown Prosecution Service to fight cases on behalf of grooming gang victims without necessitating their presence in courtrooms. This is not a call for a revocation of due process but a plea for a more protective stance towards victims of these heinous crimes.

Help us to make the UK a place to be proud of again, one where justice is served swiftly and without retraumatisation of the victims. Sign this petition to support the law reform that will protect grooming gang victims from needless court ordeals.
