Reform Investigation Process for Missing Children in Canada

Reform Investigation Process for Missing Children in Canada

The Issue

To: Canadian Federal and Provincial Governments, RCMP, and Provincial Police Services

Having supported families like those of Dylan Ehler, and now Lilly and Jack Sullivan, I can no longer stay silent. These children matter. Their families matter. It is time for real change.

Every time a child goes missing in Canada, the cycle is heartbreakingly familiar: families plead for help, media interest wanes too soon, and communities are left in turmoil without answers. According to the RCMP, over 40,000 children are reported missing in Canada each year. While many cases are resolved swiftly, too many linger unresolved, leaving families in long-term anguish and without closure.

The current investigative procedures lack uniformity and urgency across provinces, leading to delays that can cost lives. The disparity in response times and resources allocated to missing children cases is unacceptable. Every missing child case should trigger a swift, standardized, and well-coordinated response across all jurisdictions in Canada.

We urge the Canadian federal and provincial governments, RCMP, and provincial police services to undertake the following reforms:

1. **Implement a National Standard Operating Procedure:** Establish and enforce a national protocol for investigating cases of missing children, ensuring that every case receives immediate and equal attention, regardless of jurisdiction.

2. **Increase Training and Resources:** Invest in specialized training for law enforcement agencies to handle missing children cases efficiently and empathically. Equip them with adequate resources to act swiftly and effectively.

3. **Enhance Inter-Agency Collaboration:** Strengthen the collaboration between different police services, government bodies, and non-profit organizations to ensure seamless information sharing and coordination in search operations.

4. **Boost Public Awareness:** Launch national campaigns to keep the public informed and vigilant, encouraging community involvement and media engagement that sustains momentum until a resolution is achieved.

These changes not only help bring missing children safely back home but also provide their families with the support and hope they desperately need.

Sign this petition to demand immediate reforms to the investigation process for missing children in Canada. Every child deserves to be found, and every family deserves answers. Let's stand together to prioritize the safety and well-being of our children.
