Reform harsh sentencing for non-violent crimes in Mississippi
The Issue
My soon-to-be husband is facing a heartbreaking reality: 38 years in prison for a non-violent drug-related offense. This harsh sentence strips him away from his family and his community, leaving his children without a father, and me without my partner. He's not a violent offender, just a person who stumbled along a difficult path while trying to cope with personal struggles. This kind of extreme punishment does not help, it only perpetuates pain and cycles of hardship.
In Mississippi, there are countless others like him - individuals handed excessive sentences for non-violent crimes. Statistics show that in Mississippi, the prison population is overburdened with people serving extensive sentences for non-violent offenses. According to a report by the Brennan Center for Justice, excessive sentencing for these crimes costs taxpayers millions of dollars annually, money that could otherwise be allocated to rehabilitation programs.
Mississippi's recidivism rate remains one of the highest in the country largely due to systemic issues like these. People, when released after years behind bars, are not better equipped to re-enter society. Instead, their absence leaves families broken and children more likely to fall into the same patterns without a stable support system.
Reforming the state's sentencing laws can change this. We need to invest in rehabilitation, not just punishment.
