The Issue

Like many other patients, I found a drastic improvement in the treatment of my conditions. However, under current regulations, we face the threat of losing our driving licenses due to a narrow view of these prescribed medical products, and I am driven to act on behalf of all those facing the same obstacle.

Current UK driving laws consider 2 micrograms (µg) per litre of blood as the legal threshold for drugs such as THC, the active ingredient in cannabis. These standards fail to take into account the growing use of medicinal cannabis prescriptions, creating a worrying predicament for users like myself.

((this law has not been updated since  2 March 2015)

Around 1.4 million people in the UK now rely on medical cannabis, according to a YouGov survey commissioned by The Centre For Medicinal Cannabis in June 2019. The number will continue to increase as medical professionals aim to limit reliance on opioids, reinforcing the urgency for change.

This standard reading does not account for the medication's ability to remain in our systems for extended periods. Medical users like myself, who take our prescribed dosages responsibly, will invariably fail these tests, risking legal repercussions detrimental to our everyday lives.

I urge lawmakers to reevaluate these regulations and establish guidelines that differentiate between legal, medicinal users and illicit drug use, reflecting the reality of living with prescribed cannabis products. Please sign this petition to advocate for change that will allow us to continue our treatment without fear. Support us in advocating for a fair and compassionate approach to the laws governing prescribed cannabis use and driving.
