Reform Current Employment Law: Transition to a 4-Day/32-hour Work Week
The Issue
Like many people today, I grew up with parents who were invariably occupied with work, a common narrative in our fast-paced society. As a result, their physical and mental health suffered, and their fatigue extended to our home environment. I have been impacted by this imbalance, grappling with anxiety and technology addiction–a testament to the toll it can take.
To address these increasing societal issues, I propose we transition to a 4-day work week of 8 hours each day. Our society has seen exponential advancement over the last 30 years, more than the previous centuries combined. With this lightning speed of progress, it is crucial that our work-life balance evolve to mirror these changes, addressing escalating mental health issues and preventing work burnouts.
This proposed adjustment has been tried as a pilot program before it became permanent in many European countries so far. The pilot program has shown that productivity levels increase and employees were happier thus it was made permanent. Coconut Software and Sensei Labs, are among the few Canadian companies that have switched to the 4-day work week.
More importantly, it would provide parents with much-needed quality time to spend with their families. China recently announced switching to the 4-day week to provide workers with more family time and are finding that it's increasing productivity as a result.
This reformation is not just sentimental but is informed by research showing the detrimental effects of overworking. According to a study by the Mental Health Foundation, people working long hours are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and poorer sleep quality (Mental Health Foundation, 2017). In the past decade, the mental health movement has gained alot of traction since many families, and youth are being affected.
It's time our employment laws reflect the dynamics of our modern society. I urge you to sign this petition, calling upon policy makers to reassess our work week model and prioritize the mental well-being of our citizens. In doing so, we fortify societal bounds, fostering healthier homes, workplaces, and communities.
Switching full time to 32 hours 4-day week and part-time to 16 hours, it provides many opportunities to be with family and make some extra money. Many families are struggling to make ends meet in the current economy, by making the proposed change people can get remote jobs to help financially also.
There are many benefits to switching to 4-day work for both the employers and employees. Increased productivity, happier employees, work-life balance, more family time will result in decrease in mental health issues are some of the benefits.
