The Issue

As a concerned citizen, I've witnessed firsthand how Congress seems to have drifted away from the everyday realities faced by their constituents. The gap between Congressional living standards and those they represent has grown alarmingly wide. It's imperative we address this discrepancy to ensure our representatives truly understand the struggles of ordinary Americans and effectively serve our nation's interest.

Currently, members of Congress are compensated with salaries significantly above the national average. According to the Congressional Research Service, in 2021, the annual salary of most senators, representatives, delegates, and the resident commissioner from any region was $174,000. This figure starkly contrasts with the median household income in the United States, which the U.S. Census Bureau cited as approximately $67,521 in 2020.

Moreover, Congressional benefits extend far beyond just their salaries. Members of Congress enjoy generous health insurance packages, special tax deductions, extensive travel allowances, and lifetime pensions. While public servants deserve fair compensation, it's crucial their remuneration aligns closely with the economic realities of their constituents. It is our duty to demand accountability and ensure that these perks do not turn into complacency or disconnectedness from the people they serve.

We propose revisiting the Congressional pay structure with an emphasis on moderation and transparency. Implementing incremental salary reductions coupled with a comprehensive review of benefits can bring Congressional compensations in line with those of hardworking American families. Additionally, by linking future pay raises to economic indicators like inflation and middle-class wage growth, Congress can set an example of fiscal responsibility.

We propose that Congressional Representatives are limited to the same investment platform that all federal employees have access to. The Federal Thrift Savings system is the vehicle that prepares both military and federal civilians for retirement. Members of Congress have access to information that places them far ahead of any stock exchange notices. There is evidence that shows that many members of Congress are making financial decisions based on that information and that they are benefiting from their positions more now than ever before. They should be limited to only using TSP, and all trades placed by immediate family should be monitored and scrutinized heavily based upon the information that they have direct access to.

We propose that there be a deep look into travel, meals, and housing accommodations during official travel. Both military and federal civilians have massive oversight on all expenses during official travel. Members of Congress have made it apparent that they live lavishly while traveling on the taxpayers wallets.

Your voice is essential in ensuring that those who govern us do so with empathy and understanding of the financial challenges faced by millions of Americans. Changing this outdated system could foster stronger connections between Congress and constituents, leading to more empathetic policy-making. Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to reform Congressional pay and benefits. Together, we can work to bridge the gap and create a fairer system for all.
