Reform Chilean Police Training to Combat Rising Sexual Assaults on Women

Reform Chilean Police Training to Combat Rising Sexual Assaults on Women
The issue
We are a pair of Chilean women residing in New Zealand, deeply concerned about the escalating incidences of reported sexual assault against women in our home country. We feel the constant dread, even though we are miles away, deeply rooted in the fact that the ones in the uniform who are supposed to safeguard our rights, merely become the harbingers of trepidation. Life should not be lived in the shadow of fear, especially fear of those who are meant to protect you.
Chile, although competes with Latin America's most prosperous countries, has a disconcerting rate of sexual violence. From 2010 to 2016, over 16,500 cases of sexual violence were recorded by the Chilean National Service for Women and Gender Equality (SERNAM). To our dismay, studies point out that the actual numbers could be considerably higher due to underreporting, largely facilitated by the fear engendered by the authorities.
As Chilean women, we believe that this issue cannot be summarily dismissed by the state. A change in the policy regarding the training of police officers in our nation is essential. By incorporating comprehensive sensitivity and behavioral training programs, we can reinforce their aptitude, ability, and respect towards women, which will only strengthen their role as protectors. We urged the government and relevant authorities to prioritize this issue, to establish Chile as a safe, equal society for all.
There is a dire need for serious introspection and reformations within the Chilean Police Department. We believe a change starts with training, and that through a concerted, conscientious effort, we can make our streets safe for every woman, every individual. Please sign this petition to support us in ensuring the safety of every woman in our beloved country, Chile.
