The Issue

The classification of "Autism Spectrum Disorder" (ASD) currently encompasses a broad range of conditions, including Autistic Disorder, also known as classic autism or level three autism. This inclusion has inadvertently led to a disservice to children and adults who are profoundly affected and completely disabled by their condition. It is crucial that their unique needs and challenges are acknowledged and addressed appropriately by the medical community.

The spectrum terminology, while well-intentioned, often results in a lack of specificity that can detrimentally affect individuals who are completely disabled by their condition. By grouping those with severe autism under the broad ASD umbrella, we fail to recognize the distinct and serious nature of their disability. We must advocate for a separate and precise diagnosis that accurately defines their needs and ensures they receive the appropriate care and support.

Research indicates that individuals with classic autism require specialized interventions and support systems tailored to their specific challenges. Without a dedicated diagnosis, these individuals risk being overlooked in clinical settings and their needs inadequately met. This situation not only affects their quality of life but also places an undue burden on families and caregivers who strive to provide the necessary support.

Revising this classification is a call to action for medical professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders to recognize and validate the experiences of those with profound autism. By establishing a clear and separate diagnosis, we can pave the way for more effective treatment options, funding allocations, and increased understanding and awareness.

We urge the National Institute of Mental Health and relevant medical and psychological associations to take immediate action in revising the diagnostic criteria for autism. It is time to give those with classic autism the respect and recognition they deserve. Please join us in this effort to reform the classification for the betterment of those who are completely disabled by their condition and their families.
