Reform Assisted Suicide Laws to Protect Victims of Domestic Abuse

Reform Assisted Suicide Laws to Protect Victims of Domestic Abuse
The Issue
I am a grieving parent, sharing a story that is both deeply personal and tragically common. My 26-year-old daughter was trapped in an extremely abusive relationship, subjected to frequent physical assault and rape. She lived in constant fear, her mental health deteriorating under the strain of her circumstances until she felt there was no way out but suicide. On August 7th, 2023, she took her own life.
Despite presenting clear evidence of abuse to the Mansfield Texas Police Department - messages from her phone detailing the horrors she endured - they refused to take up the case due to lack of a live witness. This is not justice; this is a failure of our legal system.
Current laws around assisted suicide do not adequately protect victims like my daughter. They fail those who are driven into such despair by their abusers that they see no other option but suicide. The law must change so that perpetrators can be held accountable for their role in driving victims to such desperate measures.
According to statistics from National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States alone. That's more than 10 million women and men every year who could potentially find themselves in my daughter's position if we don't act now.
We need your support for this petition demanding reform on laws concerning assisted suicide and domestic violence cases without live witnesses. Let us ensure that no more lives are lost due to systemic failures or loopholes protecting abusers instead of victims.
Please sign this petition today; let's make these changes together for all those suffering silently behind closed doors.
