The Issue

The loss of a loved one is a deeply personal and emotional experience. In today's digital world, a significant part of a person's life and legacy can be stored electronically on devices and cloud services like Apple iCloud.

Unfortunately, accessing this data after a user's passing can be a engthy and difficult process, often requiring a court order.
We, the undersigned, petition Apple to modify its policies to grant verified next of kin access to a deceased user's iCloud data and Apple ID information, without requiring a
court order. The current process for accessing a deceased user's data often involves:

● Hiring an attorney to navigate complex legal procedures.

● Securing a court order, which can be time-consuming and expensive.

● Dealing with additional delays and potential denials.

This adds unnecessary stress and financial burden to families already coping with a loss. For many families, a deceased user's digital data holds immense sentimental value. Photos, messages, documents, and other files can provide comfort, closure, and precious memories for loved ones.

Granting easier access to this data can help families:

● Preserve memories: Access photos, videos, and messages that hold significant emotional
value.

● Manage financial affairs: Locate important documents related to finances, subscriptions, or
insurance.

● Close online accounts: Securely close accounts to prevent unauthorized access or security
risks.

We understand the importance of data privacy. Apple is already known for its strong security measures. This petition proposes granting access only to verified next of kin, through a process
that could involve:

● Submission of a death certificate.
● Verification of next of kin relationship.
● Potential limitations on accessed data (e.g., financial information, purchases

My son passed away on January 23, 2023. Since then, we have been trying tirelessly to retrieve his pictures, videos and text message conversations - precious memories that are irreplaceable. However, the current policies of Apple Inc. prevent us from accessing this data without a court order.

Apple is one of the largest tech companies in the world with over 1.5 billion active devices globally (source: Statista). Its stringent data privacy policies are renowned and while they serve a crucial purpose in protecting user privacy, they also create barriers for grieving families like ours who simply wish to hold onto memories of our loved ones.

We propose that Apple reforms its policies to allow next of kin access to a deceased person's data with proper verification, without necessitating a court order. This change would not only ease the emotional burden on grieving families but also uphold respect for personal relationships and human dignity.

Please sign this petition if you believe in our cause and support our request for policy reform at Apple Inc., so no other family has to face such an ordeal during their time of grief.
