Reform Allentown parking authority’s ticketing rules

Reform Allentown parking authority’s ticketing rules
The Issue
We need immediate action to reform the Allentown Parking Authority's (APA) ticketing rules. Every day, residents like myself, my neighbors, family, and friends are subjected to seemingly arbitrary and unfair ticketing practices. My husband, who transports cars for his dealership, has been consistently ticketed for not having a dated inspection despite the legal license plates on the vehicles. Recently, I experienced the frustration firsthand when I was ticketed in less than three minutes while quickly purchasing an item from a store—a store where I was the only customer at the time. Neighbors too have faced nonsensical penalties, such as receiving tickets for parking too close to the curb, an infraction that defies common sense.
The frequency and nature of these fines raise a significant concern over the APA's focus, as it seems to emphasize revenue generation over maintaining public safety or convenience. This punitive approach does not only strain personal finances but also erodes community trust and goodwill towards the city's governance. It is high time for the Allentown City Council to intervene and mandate a thorough revision of the APA’s ticketing regulations.
Our goal is to push for new rules that are just, realistic, and aligned more closely with genuine safety requirements. We urge the City Council to eliminate or reduce fines for petty and non-safety related infractions, while still upholding enforcement of serious violations that pose real risks. This approach would ensure that regulations serve their true purpose: ensuring public safety rather than unjustly penalizing residents.
Consequently, we propose the following actionable solutions:
1. Establish a grace period for minor parking violations to provide residents a fair chance to correct their actions without immediate penalization.
2. Develop an appeal process that is accessible and efficient, allowing residents to contest tickets that they believe were unjustly issued.
3. Clarify and communicate specific parking rules clearly to the community, reducing misunderstandings and ensuring everyone knows what is expected.
4. Halt overzealous monitoring or incentivization of unreasonable ticket issuances.
Together, by urging a reconsideration and reform of these rules, we can foster a fairer parking system in Allentown, improve community-city relations, and restore people's trust in the local authorities.
Please sign this petition to signal our demand for fair and reasonable parking enforcement from the Allentown Parking Authority.
