The Issue

James Scott, a man unjustly sentenced to life in prison, stands as a living representation of a flawed justice system. In 1993, he was held accountable for a terrible natural disaster - the notorious flood that devastated much of the Midwest. The contention that Scott's removal of one sandbag caused the levee to break and consequently resulted in the flood, is both scientifically and logically flawed. Yet, James Scott was hastily scapegoated and received a grossly unjust punishment of life imprisonment with parole and has been incarcerated for 31 years.

It must be noted here that in 1993, flood insurance wasn't prevalent, causing many farmers to lose their land in the flood, with no insurance to cover the damages. For these unforeseen losses, if vandalism could be proven, insurance recovery was possible. This may have tempted authorities to conjure a crime where there was none, casting James Scott as a villain to enable the recovery of losses.

As we approach James Scott's 31st year of imprisonment, now is the ideal time to call upon our justice system to reexamine his case thoroughly and impartially, considering the anomalies and potential bias in his previous trial. Therefore, we urge concerned citizens, legal experts, and everyone who believes in the necessity of fair justice to support this campaign. It's time to abolish the practice of assigning human scapegoats for natural disasters and instead, promote fact-based legal decisions.
