Deny proposal for Armatec Military Testing Site near Algonquin Park and Benoir Lake, Haliburton
This petition made change with 3,001 supporters!
Armatec wants to detonate explosives and do mobility testing of tanks throughout the proposed area near Algonquin Park, Benoir, Elephant and Baptiste lakes and the York river in Haliburton County. To do this, Armatec needs approval from the Dysart Municipal Council to amend the Dysart Official Plan as well as amend a zoning by-law. We are petitioning Dysart Municipal Council to deny them these changes. There has been no environmental assessment of the potential harm this may do to wildlife, the ecosystem and waterways.
It is extremely important to protect the wildlife of this area. There are important wildlife and marsh habitats in the area specifically for blue heron, ducks, turtles, beavers, moose, deer (winter feeding range), and wolves among others. The proposed land is only 500 metres from Benoir lake, Elephant lake and York River and only a few thousand metres from Algonquin Park.
If this military testing area was passed it will also tarnish the image of the Haliburton Highlands area and this would be detrimental to tourism and the local economy, including the local property values and businesses values in the area.
The Dysart Municipal Council can put a stop to this, and they'll be making a decision at the end of March. Please sign this petition and help show strong support for our natural environment.
