The Issue

I’m living proof of the crippling consequences of the current peak surge rates of Blue Ridge Co-op in Pickens County, SC. During the harsh winter months, I had to keep my heat at a miserable 57 degrees just to avoid the crippling fees associated with using power during peak hours. Choosing between basic comfort and receiving a severe financial blow shouldn’t be a reality I or anyone else faces. I run a small business while holding a normal job, yet the high cost of electricity during peak hours means I’m forced to halt work between 3-6 PM, a critical time for many businesses and families.

This is not a sustainable or fair system—far from the cooperative spirit that should guide our local utility services. Rather than serving their community with fairness and understanding, current policies seem designed to maximize profits no matter the burden they place on the people they’re meant to serve. Unethical peak charges are not just an expense; they’re a significant emotional and practical toll on families and individuals trying to live their lives.

I call on the responsible authorities to reevaluate the $13.00 per kW for the hog used single-hour peak charge. It is imperative we have a billing system that doesn’t penalize us for using electricity at normal hours when most people are home and active. A fair approach, such as implementing a cap on charges, would ensure that customers are not unreasonably punished while ensuring the sustainability of our power services. Or not charge more than the company they are buying power from. ( Duke power at the highest cost is 0.36

Let us push for fair and reasonable changes. Sign this petition to advocate a fair structure that considers the well-being of all residents in Pickens County, Anderson County and Oconee County, and help us make the utility service reflective of the cooperative principles it should uphold. Together, we can drive the necessary change to create a healthier, happier, and more equitable community.
